If you don't like the voices that are supplied with the 720, you can opt to buy celebrity voices. Out of the box, you have a choice of more than 20 languages. TomTom has always been known for excellent language support, and the GO 720 is no exception. The GO 720 includes text-to-speech conversion that pronounces street names and route numbers. And, if you have an iPod, you can control it from the GO 720 screen with an optional cable. The photo gallery lets you play a slide show of your photos and set the slide duration time. You have options of searching by artist, album, song, genre, or playlists. The TomTom Jukebox media player is the best I've seen in a GPS, too.

It comes with a Bluetooth speakerphone interface, along with audio output options for line out, Bluetooth Hi-Fi, an internal speaker, and an FM modulator to "broadcast" to your car radio. There's no shortage of high-end features on the GO 720. In fact, it's one of the few GPS devices that I can recall having a dock.

(TomTom Home is software that comes with the GO 720 that connects to the TomTom site. It also comes with a USB dock that makes connecting to your computer for TomTom Home updates a snap. The GO 720 is supplied with a simple yet effective ball-and-socket-type suction-cup windshield mount, as well as adhesive dashboard mount for states that don't permit windshield attachments. You can also supplement storage using the available SD card slot on the bottom of the device. Of this 2GB, approximately 500MB are available for pictures, MP3 files, optional POI databases, traffic-camera databases, or additional maps. Unlike the GO 910, which has a 20GB hard drive, the GO 720 stores TeleAtlas map data for the United States and Canada and POI data in its 2GB of built-in memory. Commuters will appreciate that the GO 720 is "traffic ready" with the purchase of an optional RDS receiver. TomTom declined to name the manufacturer of the GPS receiver module, but my review unit exhibited the same high sensitivity and tracked the same number of satellites in my office (near a window) as other products I've reviewed with SiRFstarIII receivers. As with all TomTom GPSs, there's one physical button (for power) all other input is done from the keyboard, or, as an option, a Bluetooth remote control. Measuring just 3.3 by 4.7 by 0.9 inches HWD and weighing 7.8 ounces (222 grams, according to my scale) without the mounting bracket, the GO 720 has a 4.3-inch (diagonal) WQVGA (480 by 720 pixels) touch screen display. The TomTom GO 720 sports a sleek new design. TomTom's new GO 720 ($499.95 list) tries to solve this problem by featuring new, innovative Map Share technology that can keep your maps and POIs updated based on input from thousands of TomTom users. There's no doubt that for the two map data providers, Navteq and Tele Atlas, keeping maps and POIs (points of interest) up to date is a gargantuan task.

The most frequent complaint I receive about GPS devices from readers is that it's difficult, if not impossible, to update a GPS product's maps.
